What is a Birth Doula?
The world Doula is a Greek term meaning servant to a woman. Today it is used to describe a trained professional who supports women through pregnancy, birth and the initial postpartum period. A birth doula is an expert on childbirth and can be a source of information for both the expecting mother and her partner. A Birth Doula works with her client throughout pregnancy and remains with her for the entire duration of active labor and birth to help promote a peaceful, satisfying and safe birth experience. Whether it is at home, hospital or birthing center a Doulas work includes non-clinical tasks such as providing comfort measures, massage, aromatherapy, breathing techniques and guided meditation. She acts as an advocate for her client and helps to create a safe and comfortable birthing environment.
